How to make a roll-on fragrance?

Plants have long been attributed various healing properties. Essential oils are, in fact, natural chemical compounds extracted from plants. Incredibly powerful, by the way!

They can heal us physically, mentally, and emotionally. They are particularly effective when applied topically, allowing the oil to be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, thus stimulating the body with the healing properties of plants.

Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin. Before applying them to the skin, they should always be diluted with a carrier oil. It is especially convenient to use a roll-on bottle for diluting. The roll-on bottle is convenient to carry with you and to use anytime, anywhere - at home, at work, or on the go!

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are delicate, fragrant-free vegetable oils that can be used independently for skin and hair care or for diluting essential oils, making them safe to apply to the skin (because essential oils are highly concentrated in their pure form).

Essential oils themselves are highly volatile, which means that they begin to dissipate immediately after use. Carrier oils help to slow down this process. They also aid the absorption of essential oils through the skin.

Essential oils should always be diluted in botanical oils and not in chemical, animal, or mineral oils.

Like essential oils, carrier oils are different and their properties vary slightly. When choosing a carrier oil, you should take into account the purpose for which it is intended to be used - either in skin care products, as a massage oil, or when creating a fragrance mixture. The active ingredients, viscosity, and rate of absorption of each carrier oil should be taken into account as appropriate.

We have selected out the most popular carrier oils for roll-on fragrance blends and already put them in a roll-on bottle for convenient use.

Concentrations of dilutions of essential oils

For healthy adults it is considered safe to use a diluted mixture with a maximum concentration of essential oils of 5%. For a shorter period, a stronger 10% solution is also allowed. In very rare cases, such as severe pain or muscle cramps, a more stronger, 25% solution may be used. If you want to use a solution on very large areas of skin, then you should use a 2% solution, because essential oils are highly concentrated and are absorbed into the bloodstream in larger quantities on a larger skin area.

For children aged 6+ years, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, adults with sensitive skin, and the elderly, it is recommended to use a 1% dilution.

For children aged 2 to 5 years it is recommended to use essential oil dilutions with a concentration of 0,5%.

Dilution of essential oil according to the concentration

For an essential oil dilution with a concentration of 0,5%, add to 10 ml carrier oil (for example in a 10 ml roll-on bottle) one drop* of pure essential oil

For a 1% dilution, add to 10 ml carrier oil 2 drops* of pure essential oil

For a 2% dilution, add 4 drops* of pure essential oil

For a 5% dilution, add 10 drops* of pure essential oil

For a 10% dilution, add 20 drops* of pure essential oil

For a 25% dilution, add 50 drops* of pure essential oil

* Quantities are estimated as drop sizes vary. The exact amount depends on the viscosity of the oil. General instructions are provided.

How to make a roll-on fragrance blend?

The fragrance blend requires a roll-on bottle (10 ml capacity), carrier oil (approx. 10 ml or approx. 2 teaspoons) and essential oil according to the selected concentration (see previous point or the reminder below).

Remove the roller cap from the bottle, fill the bottle with the prescribed drops of essential oil and the rest with the carrier oil. Put the roller back on and shake the bottle well to mix the oils. Then the blend is ready to use!

How to use a roll-on fragrance blend?

Roll-on fragrance blends can be applied to almost any area on the skin:

  • if you want to use it just as a perfume and for aromatherapy, then apply it on the inside of the wrist, behind ears, on the neck or on the decolletage;
  • if you want to relieve headaches or tension, then apply it on the temples;
  • to promote better sleep and for relaxation, you can apply it also under your feet, as the oil should be released from there into the bloodstream faster. Imagine how amazing would be to have a foot massage with this oil!

Attention! Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes to avoid irritation! In case of contact with eyes or mucous membranes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, get medical attention.

Before using a new essential oil you should always do an allergy test. Read more about it HERE.
