Description

Thyme

Origin and background

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a perennial evergreen shrub.

The ancient Egyptians used thyme for embalming. The ancient Greeks dedicated this plant to the goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite. They also added it to the bath water and burned it in the temples. However, the ancient Romans smelled the living spaces with thyme, and it was probably through them that it spread north of the Alps.

In medieval monastery gardens, this plant was known as a spice and medicinal plant. It was added to bundles of plants that were thought to protect against infectious diseases.

According to Christian legends, thyme is a particularly sacred and powerful plant. According to one story, the plant has gained its special effect from the fact that the Mother of God sat on it while resting her feet. According to another tradition, the Virgin Mary wore a wreath made of it when she married Joseph. Thyme is also called the "bed of straw" of the Virgin Mary, because the bed in which she slept with little Jesus was made of thyme in addition to other plants. However, according to a 17th-century cookbook, thyme and beer help get rid of shyness.

Thyme oil has always been one of the most valuable essential oils in the world. It is used in many foods, beverages, cosmetics, and even mouthwashes.

Properties

Aromatic properties

When feeling tired and fatigued in the middle of the day, thyme oil is just the right one to help. The fresh and herbal aroma of thyme helps stimulate and shake up the mind and makes more alert.

Thyme oil naturally contains ingredients that insects don't like. Therefore, its aroma also acts as a very effective insect repellent. You can keep thyme-scented cloth-balls in your closet to repel moths, or apply thyme oil diluted with carrier oil to your skin while you are outside on a warm summer evening, keeping these annoying characters away.

Healing properties

Thyme oil has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. It also acts as a diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, antirheumatic, and is also used as a tonic. Caution should be exercised in high blood pressure, as thyme essential oil also raises blood pressure.

Thyme essential oil helps heal the whole body. Above all, it helps improve the blood circulation, thereby increasing blood flow to the limbs and facilitating the transport of oxygen to the necessary parts of the body. It can also help protect the heart and reduce the chance of blood clots forming, while helping to keep the body active.

When applied to the skin, thyme oil helps heal wounds and scars, prevent inflammatory pain, moisturize the skin, and even reduce the prominence of acne. The mixture of antiseptic properties and antioxidant stimulants contained in this oil helps support aging skin - keeping the skin clear, healthy, and youthful.

Due to its stimulating and toning effect, thyme oil can also help stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss.

There are two main causes of rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. The first is related to obstructed blood circulation and the second is the increasing concentration of toxins in the bloodstream (e.g. increased uric acid). Thyme essential oil helps solve both problems. As this oil has a diuretic effect, it increases urination and helps remove toxins from the body.

Recommended uses

Topical

  • It is recommended to use essential oils and their blend in a diluted form. Especially for sensitive and gentle skin. This means adding a small amount of water or carrier oil before applying it to the skin. The blend can be placed, for example, in a roll-on bottle that is convenient to carry along and can be used at any convenient time.
  • Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
Aromatic
  • Can be used in an aroma diffuser both at home or in the office to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere that relaxes the senses and creates a pleasant aroma around you.
  • It can also be added to an oil burner. Don't forget to add water to the oil burner and then drip in the essential oil! Pure essential oil is too strong and has a faint odor.
  • Can be added to hot bath water and enjoy an aromatic mini-vacation in the middle of everyday life or at the end of a busy week.
  • Combine it with other compatible oils (see recommendations below) in a diffuser or bath water.
  • Can be diluted in the spray bottle with water and spray it at home, in the office, or just to refresh your bed linen.

Compatibility with other essential oils

Orange, basil, bergamot, grapefruit, jasmine, lime, lavender, rosemary, sage, cedarwood, ylang ylang.
