Description

Patchouli

Origin and background

Patchouli essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves of the plant Pogostemon cablin , which belongs to the mints family. This plant comes from Malaysia and India. The word patchouli comes from the Tamil language patchai ellai , which means green leaf.

Patchouli has a heavy, spicy, musky sweet aroma that only gets better and more intense over time. Due to its heavy and strong smell, patchouli has been valued in the perfume industry for centuries, and relatively recently it has also been widely used in incense, insect repellents, and even alternative medicine. It is valued primarily in skin care, especially in scar treatment.

Historically, the use of patchouli became more widespread in the 1960s, making it closely associated with hipigeneration. Among the hippies, it became popular because it concealed all kinds of body odors, as well as the recognizable aroma of cannabis smoking.

However, centuries ago in Europe, this plant was so valued that it was even exchanged for gold. In the 19th century, patchouli began to be used as an insect repellent. For example, it was used to scent various Indian fabrics, such as fine silk and silk scarves, to keep moths and other insects away. However, without the specific smell of patchouli, it was not even possible to sell the silk scarves imported from India - this smell simply had to accompany them.

Properties

Aromatic properties

Unlike most essential oils, which oxidize over time and decrease in therapeutic quality, the aroma of patchouli essential oil gets better with time - like fine wine.

In the Orient, patchouli oil is used in potpourriisand scented sachets, placed between sheets and clothes to keep the laundry freshly scented while keeping out bedbugs, moths, and other annoying insects. Patchouli oil balances emotions and creates a loving atmosphere. When used in an oil burner, it relieves anxiety and depression.

Patchouli helps get rid of negative emotions, promotes relaxation, and increases libido.

In aromatherapy, the aroma of patchouli can reduce appetite, thereby effectively contributing to weight loss.

Healing properties

Patchouli essential oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It also has antibacterial and antifungal effects.

By adding patchouli oil to bath water, it helps against various skin irritations and ailments, treats fungal infections, fluid retention, breaks down cellulite, and relieves constipation. It has very good cell renewal properties, accelerates healing, reduces scars, and fights infections. It is also helpful for acne, eczema, ulcers, and skin cracks.

Patchouli oil can also be added to hair care products or simply use to rinse your hair and scalp if you want to reduce the greasiness of the hair or get rid of dandruff. At the same time, it also helps strengthen the hair structure.

Patchouli strengthens the immune system and improves cognitive functions (memory, attention, and concentration).

Recommended uses

Topical

  • It is recommended to use essential oils and their blend in a diluted form. Especially for sensitive and gentle skin. This means adding a small amount of water or carrier oil before applying it to the skin. The blend can be placed, for example, in a roll-on bottle that is convenient to carry along and can be used at any convenient time.
  • Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
Aromatic
  • Can be used in an aroma diffuser both at home or in the office to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere that relaxes the senses and creates a pleasant aroma around you.
  • It can also be added to an oil burner. Don't forget to add water to the oil burner and then drip in the essential oil! Pure essential oil is too strong and has a faint odor.
  • Can be added to hot bath water and enjoy an aromatic mini-vacation in the middle of everyday life or at the end of a busy week.
  • Combine it with other compatible oils (see recommendations below) in a diffuser or bath water.
  • Can be diluted in the spray bottle with water and spray it at home, in the office, or just to refresh your bed linen.

Compatibility with other essential oils

Clary sage, frankincense, myrrh, bergamot, pine, rosewood, sandalwood, amyris, ginger, lavender, lemongrass.
